Any book that has a movie I can see instead gets an “A+”! In actuality, I will read this book and have as many intelligent comments to add at our next meeting as I did about The Stars My Destination. Gary Foyle

Next book: Choke by Chuck Palahniuk
Posted in Uncategorized on September 27, 2008 | 2 Comments »
It looks like we agreed to read Choke by Chuck Palahniuk. The King’s English already has a few copies, so probably no need to order more. There’s a movie based on the novel currently playing in your local theaters. It stars Sam Rockwell. Maybe we can all read the book and see the film. Or, [...]

Might I suggest late summer/early autumn beers as a theme for the late Sept meeting? I’ve got three homebrewed saisons I’ll bring–two autumnal and one more [...]
What I Like So Far
Posted in Uncategorized on September 14, 2008 | 4 Comments »
In the first two chapters, we have mind-powered travel (called “jaunting), neo-tribalism in space, and a protagonist’s insatiable thirst for revenge. The novel’s written in a clipped, hard boiled prose style. It’s Dashiell Hammett meets Isaac Asimov, Raymond Chandler meets Robert Heinlein. Oh yes, my friends, I like this book so far. Did I mention [...]

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester has arrived at The King’s English bookstore. There were a few copies left when I went to pick mine up a few days ago.
